Any meal would not be complete without any dessert. Regarded as the “concluding course”, desserts often come as sweets treats such as fruits, ice creams, cheesecakes, cookies, pies, puddings, and many others. Though desserts may vary from one country to another, one thing is for sure – desserts are a must!

 

Ma Lai Go

Considered as one of Hong Kong’s traditional desserts, Ma Lai Go is a sponge cake that is often eaten during breakfast. Steamed in a bamboo basket, this soft and fluffy dessert is made up of eggs, flour, sugar, and lard, which are fermented for at least 2 to 3 days to make it even lighter. It also boasts of its caramel flavour that will make you crave for more. Though making one would require patience as it takes days for the fermentation process to be completed, it will surely be worth the wait!

Cendol

Desserts are not only limited to solid food.In reality, it could also be a drink! If you desire a refreshing drink after a sumptuous meal, Indonesia’s Cendol would be the perfect fit for you. Made up of worm-like rice flour jelly with greenish colour, this sweet dessert uses coconut milk and palm sugar. Served in a tall glass, Cendol usually has toppings such as tapai (fermented sweet cassava), azuki beans, durian, and many more.

Kek Pandan

Viewed as a Malaysian favorite, Kek Pandan is a fluffy dessert infused with pandan leaf juice. This dessert uses pandan leaf juice extracts as it exude a more tangy flavour and a deeper green hue. As years pass by, the Kek Pandan gained popularity in Malaysia’s neighbouring countries. In fact, you need not prepare one at home. You can easily purchase Kek Pandan in any cake shops in Singapore or Indonesia.

Halo-Halo

Literally translated as “assorted” in English, the Philippines’ Halo-Halo is served in a tall glass with several mixed fruits and beans such as jackfruit, sugar berry fruit, sweet potato, nata de coco, and crushed young porridge. All these are placed at the glass’ bottom portion and then, topped with shaved ice. A slice of leche flan or ube, or a scoop of ice cream is further added on top. Upon serving, milk is poured into the mixture. With these ingredients, you probably know how Halo-Halo got its name.

With a variety of sweet treats, any Asian country definitely has a lot to offer to its tourists. No wonder numerous tourists love to go on a “food trip” adventure. With all these desserts, what’s not to love with the Asian sweet treats?
